Photos: Around Nanjing

I thought I would post a few photos of scenes that I see around Nanjing every day...

Here is a small number of the bikes and scooters parked around the hotel every day. I assume most are owned by hotel employees. If any employees drive cars to work, I don't know where they park them - in the U.S. you always see as many parking lots and structures as you do buildings. In Nanjing, I don't think I have seen a regular open parking lot, and only a few underground parking garages.

This is one of the drilling rigs being used to build the line on the Nanjing subway. Subways are a new phenomenon in Nanjing - the first subway line just opened a year ago. They are going full-guns on constructing the new subway line, with explosions and drilling and pounding happening anywhere from 6am to midnight, 7 days a week. I am sure glad I remembered to bring my earplugs with me on this trip!

You notice you can see laundry hanging out to dry on a number of balconies of the rather fancy apartment building. It doesn't matter how regal or humble the apartment structure - you will see row upon row of laundry out to dry. Bras, panties, boxer - you name it, they hang it out. I just wonder with the smog problem here in Nanjing, how clean are their clothes when they bring them back inside?

Notice that all the scaffolding around this new building is bamboo. That is the norm here - no matter how high the building, I have not seen metal scaffolding.
